You may have noticed a change in how we look. That’s because we’ve had an exciting re-brand! πŸ™Œ

We are still driven by the same purpose: to develop better ways to support good mental health. But our new look will help us better communicate who we are and what we do.

Just over a month left to enter the Creative Future Writer's Award on the theme of 'reveal.' I had some success in this prize several years back and it changed everything for me. Details below..

The quotes coming in for Tom Newlands’ Only Here, Only Now are sensational β€” and rightly so. Hugely grateful to Roddy Doyle, Nathan Filer and David Peace for these three.

Just a useful reminder to remember where the burden of proof lies for fantastical claims - can save a lot of pointless argument... πŸ˜‰

My (protective) instinct is to say something glib or self-deprecating but I'm thrilled - thrilled! - to be working with Dead Ink Books on this and excited for you to read it. Coming, I believe, May 2025.

My new book now has a cover πŸ’›

I'm really glad my publisher opted for a photograph, and I think this image perfectly captures a key message of the book: that peer relationships (for better or worse) lie at the heart of adolescence and why it can affect us so much

β€œNo one has written a book like Cuckooland.” I’m beyond grateful to John Arlidge for his The Times and The Sunday Times review of my new book. After 3 years of digging into how the rich own the truth, and all manner of threats, to be Sunday Times book of the week is wondrous.

If I'd spent as long writing poems as I spent writing a failed Arts Council bid to support me in writing poems, I'd have a bloody collection by now.

I didn't enjoy being at receiving end of a (granted, modest) Xitter pile-on. Hate feeling misunderstood and doubly hate upsetting people. On plus side, I used it to talk to my daughter abt perils of social media & limitations of categorical diagnoses.

(And she still loves me.)

Mixed responses to this and I'm regretting causing upset/offense. To be clear, I don't doubt that many people suffer greatly from the traits we call ADHD. I was just trying to make the point that such broad descriptions serve nobody (least of all those who are really struggling).

Just read an article explaining that people with ADHD gravitate to the tasks at work they enjoy while finding the more mundane aspects harder to focus on.

I'm fairly sure the correct diagnostic label for that is 'human being'.

Whenever I share good news on this site, I feel I want to clarify that it's good news for me and the people who support me. Obviously, it's bad news for my enemies.

Anyway - I'm looking forward to sharing some bad news for my enemies soon.

I'm trying out new email sign-offs at work to replace 'Best wishes'.

Thinking of channeling Ozymandias vibes with a casual but powerful:

Read my name and tremble,

Nathan

I've recently finished reading a novel written by a friend and colleague. It isn't with a publisher yet. She hasn't even sent it to her agent. But it is so very, very good. Feeling privileged to be among the first readers. (And posting this so that I can smugly refer back to it.)
