Yesterday a US Navy E-6B TACAMO nuclear command, control, and communications aircraft carried out a routine mission over the North Atlantic. The track shows 12 tight loops that indicate deployment of trailing wire antenna used to communicate with ballistic missile submarines.

Yes, the growing perception among nuclear-armed states that one can use a low-yield nuke to de-escalate a conflict is a dangerous one. It is already fueling a pursuit of new options and weapons that increase rather than decrease pathways to potential nuclear use.

An extraordinary development (and Finland too) that was inconceivable just 11 years ago. Putin’s disastrous policies changed all that.

Though general military integration is complete, my understanding is that integration into the nuclear aspects of NATO takes longer.

I find Polish flirting with NATO nuclear sharing odd. Equipping Polish jets to deliver US nukes wouldn’t change Russian behavior for the better, fix a critical gap in NATO nuke posture, or make Poland feel safer. And Polish Air Force would waste time/money on nuke certification.

Nothing wrong with discussing it. But how would China allow verification of its No-First-Use pledge under such a treaty? How would any country? A declaration is nice but doesn’t change anything unless accompanied by real constraints on the posture.
