Of the almost 250,000 known marine species, scientists think all fully-aquatic marine mammals emit sounds, as well as at least 100 invertebrates and 1,000 fish species.

A new study says 500,000 metric tons of plastic reaches the ocean each year. An earlier model estimated 8 million metric tons. However, the study also shows that the amount of plastic in the ocean increases by about 4 percent every year.

One of the eight whales they tagged dove down 9,816 feet (2,992 meters), equivalent to about 32 times the height of the Statue of Liberty. What's more, the whales could dive for a long time — one stayed underwater for more than 2 hours.
