World Curlew Day is April 21st - a good time to remember that in Ireland 🇮🇪 there are fewer than 100 pairs left across the whole country. Yep, that's right - under 100 pairs. We put people on the moon, we have AI, but we can't live alongside wild and beautiful birds.
🤬😰💀

Doing ecological studies during a biodiversity crisis is difficult. In 2002 I began studying Marsh Tits in an ancient woodland to see how a functioning population worked. After 10 yrs I realised I was now documenting their slide towards local extinction:

A sad story about how one man - who has been monitoring a population of marsh tits for 22 generations - is watching them go extinct Richard Broughton 🇺🇦

Like all our soundscape pieces this week, it points to a much bigger story happening all over our planet theguardian.com/environment/20…

As natural sounds disappeared over the past 30 years, one man was listening and recording it all.

This is the story of a silent spring in one Californian park & how we got there theguardian.com/environment/20…

What does it sound & feel like when your study population heads for extinction? A pleasure to host Phoebe Weston at Monks Wood to listen for Marsh Tits.
Also in podcast a chilling piece on changing soundscape in USA.
