I have to say this is one of the weirdest stories I've ever read and really speaks to the importance of being careful what you read over the internet and the lengths the far-right is willing to go to grift everyone.

NEW: An Ottawa book festival platforming far-right speakers is using fake employees and misleading sponsors.

The Embassy of Mexico has pulled out of the event and organizations listed as sponsors want their logos taken off the festival’s website

Former Much Music VJ Bill Welychka, who was emcee of Ottawa Food & Book Expo, says he walked out on Day 2 of the festival after reading this story.

“I do not want to be associated with any group, person or ideology that offends and/or is aligned with extremist values”

UPDATE 2:

WPBS in Watertown, New York has just cancelled its media sponsorship of the Ottawa Food and Book Expo in response to this story.

“The information in your article is shocking and we had no idea about any of this,” the PBS affiliate told PressProgress.

The Mexican Embassy contacted me late last night to say they are pulling out of a festival featuring Maxime Bernier, Randy Hillier, Tom Quiggin and True North’s Andrew Lawton.

Multiple organizations listed as corporate sponsors say they never sponsored the event.

UPDATE: Local tourism association Ottawa Tourism just sent me this statement indicating they are no longer promoting the Ottawa Book Expo as a result of PressProgress’ reporting.

They felt the festival “misrepresented itself” and does not meet their “promotional standards”:

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre appears to be pandering to extremists and their pals.

This time, it’s darker — and more embarrassing — than his previous flirtations with the fringe.

As someone who has been covering this issue for years, let me break down exactly why:

That Pierre Poilievre would see it as politically expedient & worth his time to make this stop & give credence to these views & attitudes, says so very, very much. He looks way too comfortable & seems to have no qualms about being filmed. It should trouble us all, deeply.
