The British government enables people to vilify and degrade minoritised communities while they enthusiastically police the speech of people who speak out against racism, genocide, etc. It was never about free speech; it was (and is!) about defending the interests of the powerful.

What good are your “decolonial and anti-racist” reading lists/academic networks/edited collections/special issues when your university routinely uses security and cops on campus to surveil and harass staff and students acting to stop a genocide?

Governments that claim to value the rule of law should not be threatening institutions for ruling on, you know, the law. It’s painfully simple.

Disorder is not violence. Camping is not violence. Trespassing is not violence. Genocide is violence. Knocking people to the ground and choking them is violence. Shooting people with rubber bullets is violence. Just feels like we need to remind each other of the meaning of words.

Cameron Jones, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace at Columbia University, explains that Jewish students have been deeply involved with pro-Palestine protests since October and that anti-Zionism is not the same as antisemitism.

A reminder: there’s nothing wrong with being “emotional” about a genocide. In fact, a mix of emotions like grief, disgust, compassion, anger, and hope resource people to resist ongoing atrocities.

As a writer, I've often said that, among the other things that we need to reclaim, other than the obscene wealth of billionaires, is language. Language has been deployed to mean the exact opposite of what it really means when they talk about democracy or freedom.

The absorption of decolonization by settler social justice frameworks is one way the settler, disturbed by her own settler status, tries to escape or contain the unbearable searchlight of complicity.

Atrocity prevention should not be housed under 'external action' programmes alone or thought of as a purely foreign policy issue. It starts at home. Our new report analyses acute & systemic threats to queer people as well as the use of pro-LGBTQI+ positions for political gain.

Gay people being able to kiss or hold hands in public was “gay ideology.”

Gay couples getting married was “gay ideology.”

Gay parents being allowed their children was “gay ideology.”

It’s painful how “ideology” is used to describe and dismiss the rights of marginalised groups.

“Iraq's parliament has passed a bill criminalising same-sex relationships with jail terms of between 10 and 15 years. Transgender people could also be sent to prison for between one and three years under the new law.”

We must resist anti-LGBT politics.
