Ironically, this point was actually made by Lynn Enright in The Independent in 2019: 'Using the words vulva and vagina interchangeably isn’t a harmless linguistic quirk: it’s actually a technique for diminishing a woman’s sexual agency.'

I don't mean to vulvasplain, I swear!

But if the goal is to show that we are finally beginning to understand body parts that have long been misunderstood, we need to be mindful about not perpetuating the same mistakes that have helped keep this anatomy so obscure.

Dear The Independent, this article refers to the clitoris as 'the pleasure centre of the vagina.'

I think it's important to remember that the clitoris is considered part of the vulva (the outer female genitalia), not the vagina (the muscular tube that leads to the cervix).

Learning more about the vagina, clitoris, and uterus isn’t just a women’s issue, explains science journalist Rachel E. Gross. “It’s a human health issue”. More on what’s left to be discovered about these under-researched organs: bit.ly/3gYzRmd

.Rachel E. Gross, author of VAGINA OBSCURA, joined Ali Rogin and Rachel S. Rubin, MD to discuss why women's sexual health has long been understudied—and how that's changing.

🧵On the clitoris. A body part that, throughout history, has been “discovered,” dismissed and forgotten about and then re-”discovered” by (mostly male) doctors from Hippocrates on. This is what it looks like:

“There are a lot of clitorises in the world”—and all of them deserve to be taken seriously, says Rachel S. Rubin, MD.

I’m thrilled we could have this important conversation on a show as trusted as PBS NewsHour.

Thank you PBS for prioritizing female (and human!) health & pleasure:

I have one, half the world has one. I thought I was pretty well-informed about the clitoris. But I still learned a ton about the questions I need to be ready to ask my doctors from this NYT article by Rachel E. Gross

Airing TONIGHT on @newshour. Grateful to be able to discuss such a *sensitive* issue on the air. It’s so important and not discussed nearly enough. You might have seen Rachel E. Gross’ fantastic piece on the clitoris in the NYT last week. This convo picks up where that left off.

The oft-cited claim that there are more than 8,000 in the comes from a 1976 book, in reference to a study of cows.

No one had fact-checked that claim in humans -- until now.🧵
