• A quarter of illustrators (26%) and over a third of translators (36%) have already lost work due to generative AI.

• Over a third of illustrators (37%) and over 4 in 10 translators (43%) say the income from their work has decreased in value because of generative AI.

A potentially important intervention - proprietary & even government standards are often the battle ground for setting expectations for deployed AI systems. Acknowledging how politics directly shape those expectations is needed to move forward.

Actually, there's lots of interest in robustness, distribution shift, etc. It's just that after years, we've yet to make progress. My hot take: perhaps this is some fundamental limitation of ML. If so, we need to start factoring that into judgements of what this can be used for.

I'm really glad someone raised this. I think everyone saying 'this is just a science fair' is wrong. Science fairs are protected environments for minors; NeurIPS Conference is a conference that so far has been almost exclusively for adults. Really hope organizers thought this through.
