Meet the stunning Planctoteuthis squid! These rarely-seen deep-sea squids have long and elaborately decorated 'tails.' This species has long blue tendrils and bright gold iridophores on its tail that glitter in the submersible light. Stunning. 🎥 by Schmidt Ocean #DailyJelly

THAT'S A FIRST ON MARS! Curiosity ran over a rock and found crystals inside! It's pure sulfur. Elemental sulfur is something we’ve never seen before on Mars. We don't know much about these yellow crystals yet, but the team is already at work to figure it out! NASA/JPL-Caltech

Batfish are insane. Every time I see one I think of a tadpole that hasn’t fully frogged yet. Like batfish picked the most awkward phase in another animals life and just ran with it

I think this is the biggest paradigm shift in deep-sea science I've ever seen. Kudos Andrew Sweetman and team for discovering that manganese nodule fields produce O2 in the deep ocean. BBC News (UK) report: bbc.com/news/articles/… Paper: Paper: nature.com/articles/s4156…

They collected this sponge, whose name seems to have stumped everyone. Any sponge folks out there know the name of this one? Schmidt Ocean dive 695 #nazcahighseas

Thank you, The Boston Globe, for the nice write-up about our Sea Monsters exhibit at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. Folks, if you're in the Boston please swing by the museum to check out the exhibit. Drop me a line and, if I'm around, I will give you the "dime tour". 😉

A tomopteris spotted during the #NazcaHighSeas expedition, where an international team is working to characterize an understudied mountain range in the high seas off the coast of Chile. These gossamer worms never touch the seafloor, spending their entire lives in the midwater.

Stethopristes. This fish is adorable. Its coloration is also very on point...that "soap bubble" coloring is viral on social media. Schmidt Ocean #NazcaHighSeas

An enormous 120kg tuna, made into a skull mount with pectoral fins attached. It’s taken a little over a year to ensure all the oil and grease was out of it. These skulls are challenging to say the least, however the results speak for themselves #elasmomorph #fishskulls #tuna

I don’t know what’s going on, but lots of folks are retweeting this so I thought I’d pop it up to the top of my page. Whatever is happening, I hope people realize that biology is very complex, respect and privacy are important, and kindness is free. x.com/RebeccaRHelm/s…
