Why are doctors talking about voting?

All policy is health policy, and we will never have health equity without voting equity.

Sigh. Amazing how some people can turn an “I really appreciate my husband” post into “such a selfish woman.” Unless of course he meant my small children are the selfish ones?

I went to medical school because I wanted to help people. I thought medicine was the best path to healing. I now understand that policy touches every aspect of our lives. We cannot heal humans without healing policy.

Firearms are the leading cause of death in children in the United States.

You have probably heard this. But we need to keep repeating it. Outloud. Until it is no longer true.

The best part about working in the hospital through the holidays is how all of the 'extra stuff' falls away. No meetings, very few emails.

Let me tell you a little bit about the surgeon I live with…

People ask how I became an 'expert' in advocacy.

It's pretty simple.

I am knowledgeable in my field (pediatrics) & got brave enough to communicate that expertise to decision-makers. Thats it. We don't need to be experts in policy. We just need to own our expertise & share it.

My 4-year-old proudly explained that she hid in the cubby area during the preschool lockdown drill.

Looking at her, & pretending her cubby will keep her safe from assault weapons is what parenting looks like in 2022.

I did not think that becoming a pediatrician would require me to become an expert in
firearm injury, but here I am. Here we are.
