Did you know that in the UK, at Elsevier, women earn 66p for every £1 that men earn when comparing median hourly pay. Their median hourly pay is 34.1% lower than men’s. 🙃

Strange framing of non-APC models as 'emerging' when they were in fact figured out long ago by humanities and social science presses, scholar-led publishers, high-energy physicists, Latin American institutions and many others.

It is scandalous that, despite decades of warning, funding agencies & universities have allowed the primary output of billions of dollars of public investment to be privatized and made available only to those wealthy enough to pay Elsevier for them.

We’ve done a guest blog post on the Open Book Collective website, about our first book that will be published through OBC funding support. OBC is such a great initiative; ‘Entire of Itself?’ is a marvellous book; check it out here: openbookcollective.pubpub.org/pub/the-white-…

If this was published in a PLoS, MDPI, or Frontiers journal, we'd surely see a half-dozen thinkpieces by tradpub boosters complaining about low quality OA publishing.

But this was a Springer journal, so it's merely an accident, not a systemic indictment of a publishing model.

Wow (but also totally unsurprising when you think about it), open access research “used on average 42% more in patents”. Great for SMEs, helping the unlock the benefits of academic research 👍

This @morebrains analysis of the cost of administrative inefficiencies caused by academics retyping research management information unnecessarily is interesting and shows the significant value that scholarly infrastructures can deliver if they were properly supported.

As relevant as ever. Use networking site as well as, not instead of an OA repository. Even better, put a link to your item in the repository in your social networking site post

Huge kudos to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for being only the second Dutch university to adopt the initiative. This is a simple, risk-free way of signalling your recognition of the limitations of the global university rankings.
