Another bit of computer-related biomed research work that chatGPT can't seem to do: make primers. It could clearly look up and articulate the requirements, but was just pulling the template DNA out of the ether.

The long-tail of rare and can’t-miss diagnoses is a problem for AI applications in healthcare. This is compounded by the current problem of inaccuracy.

Well worth reading the N&V here and the paper from Peter Westcott. Neoantigen clonal heterogeneity has an important impact on tumor immunogenicity—and therefore on tumor responsiveness to immunotherapy.

Why has the proportion of cancers that could be prevented by known means not increased over 40 years? Paul Brennan Bert Hofman & I suggest it could be that exposures are ubiquitous link.springer.com/article/10.100… (a cancer-focused academic.oup.com/ije/article/40… update plus Richard Peto homage)

Housing insufficiency is one of the major challenges our country faces. It impacts every aspect of people’s social and economic lives. Major northeast cities should be aggressively focused on rectifying this (ideally by reducing barriers to building medium/high density housing)

This is toxic car culture par excellence. Speeding tickets should confer escalating financial penalties and rapidly lead to drivers license suspension with high bar for re-instatement. I cannot count how many close calls I have had with speeding cars in the city.

What digital software do postdocs and PIs use for project/grant/task management? My Evernote system is great but not scaling well over time.

LLMs with the ability to write code seem to overcome some of the limitations around numeracy and calculation ability. Impressive (if the results are correct - I didn’t check how these score on primer3)

Excellent piece from my friend Jordan Hirsch. The culture of innovation in the US is among the best in the world. Just look at the incredible and rapid progress in tech, science and medicine. We need to remember these strengths even in times of political turmoil.
