1/ I'm late to the party, but really jazzed about this talk by Luci Pangrazio at #CivicsofTech23, using student activity monitoring software as a case to consider the changing nature of digital literacies to explore how they may become a kind of "soft power" for ed. governance
A key lesson we also learned from Marika Pfefferkorn at #CivicsOfTech23: "Where diverse groups of people are engaging in the interlocking challenges they face, power is being generated to resist, refuse, redirect, and revitalize how we collectively define 'progress' and 'innovation'".
What do we need to be critically digitally literate? Luci Pangrazio #CivicsOfTech23 keynote w/ many interesting reflections: buff.ly/3QoA7e9. Sum at 45m. Couldn't attend whole conf but already look forward to next year's! Many thanks to Civics of Technology for organizing this.
In the category of better late than never, here are the slides from the #CivicsofTech23 presentation I gave w/Dr. Anne of Green Mountains & student Sam Barnard last week on using speculative futures to push back against techno-inevitability. Slides are open for comments. docs.google.com/presentation/d…
Thank you Dr. Kali Thompson! Appreciate you and your powerful writing on the 'cruel optimism' of educational technology teacher ambassador spaces. An important read for all educators at these same intersections of tech & teaching journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/17… #CivicsOfTech23

As a parent who struggles with how to engage my children's teachers and school administrators about ed-tech, I really appreciate the focus on caregivers by the students of the #IdaLab and their work with Twin Cities Innovation Alliance. #CivicsOfTech23
What changes are needed for ethical #edtech?#CivicsOfTech23 "The cruel optimism of educational technology teacher ambassador spaces" Dr. Kali Thompson Teachers as influencers are digital laborers in the extractive attention economy - provocative take: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
In Dr. Kali Thompson's session on teacher ambassador programs. Can't wait to read her paper on how programs create "'cruel optimism' for what we could be, rather than what we are, which in turn produces further profit for edtech companies." #CivicsOfTech23 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/17…
At this morning's #CivicsOfTech23 keynote, Luci Pangrazio urges educators and students to disrupt, resist, and reimagine ed-tech 👏🏻
