#OnThisDay 1918 The ITGWU & the Irish Trade Union Congress announced a one day countrywide general strike against the introduction of conscription in Ireland. The strike worked and conscription was never introduced here.

#Otd 1014: Victory of Brian Boru, king of Munster & Ireland, at the Battle of Clontarf.

But although victorious, he was killed, as were his son & grandson. Leinster king & Viking leaders (his in-laws) also killed (& 8,000-10,000 others)!

There was now no undisputed High King!

The Republic of Ireland Act 1948 came into force #OTD 1949. Ireland withdrew from the Commonwealth, ending the statutory role of the British monarchy in Ireland. Below is the opening page of John A. Costello's 1968 account of his declaration of a republic in 1948.

OTD 1595 As the war escalated, Gráinne Ní Mháille sought to retrench her position with the crown, offering to serve 'at their own charges at sea upon the coast of Ireland in Her Majesties wars upon all occasions' as 'true and faithful subjects' #nineyearswar

So this rather large beauty (650+ pages, ouch!) will be dropping soon from Head of Zeus. Coming on 10 May. From the 18th century secret societies to the reaction against 'strangers' (all the way from the west of Ireland!) in the midlands in the 1930s.
