Today is #EuropeDay ! #OnThisDay in 1950, 🇫🇷 FM Robert Schuman presented the Schuman Declaration, which proposed the creation of the European Coal & Steel Community. The ECSC was the first of several supranational European institutions that would ultimately become today's EU. 🇪🇺

Today we continued our celebration of the EU's 2004 enlargement. For a special lunch I hosted Ambassadors from the Member States and from countries now on the path to EU accession. Their governments are working hard to make the changes needed to join our family. And we need them.

I remain deeply disturbed by the discrimination & violence against women/girls after hearing from the Aghan and Iranian women of WDN today. The EU is committed to support all policies that allow for a full, equal, and meaningful participation of all women/girls around the world.

Strong messages before #EuropeDay : This is a huge year for democratic elections. With CSIS & Institut Jean Monnet, I shared how to ensure transatlantic unity during this time: advancing the digital/green transitions, preserving benefits of open markets & continued support for #Ukraine .

The Arctic Encounter in #Alaska last month opened my eyes to the challenges, resilience, and potential of the #Arctic . It was great to share my learnings at today's The Wilson Center event. In the areas of geopolitics, climate, development & research, the EU and US must act together.

I appreciate Coach Kemper & R. David Edelman for joining me to host last night's Institute for Education dinner on the future of AI, including China's role. I emphasized EU leadership through its AI Strategy, which will make the EU a world-class hub and ensure AI is human centric and trustworthy.

We just commemorated 20 years since the EU's biggest enlargement. Now we turn to the future. EU enlargement policy is our strongest tool to foster stability and peace on our continent.

Pleasure to meet Tania Reneaum Panszi CIDH - IACHR to talk about the state of #HumanRights in the Western Hemisphere. EU is one of the biggest global donors to human rights work — not only in words, but also actions, like contributing to efficient solutions in HR cases.
