'Republican order' is at the very heart of the #NewCaledonia crisis. Leaders across the political spectrum want an end to violent clashes. But significant numbers of New Caledonians, including the vast majority of indigenous Kanak, do not want to remain in the French Republic.

After the widespread looting or arson of shops and supermarkets in Noumea last week, access to food and supplies has been difficult for many families. Following expressions of public concern, the Government of New Caledonia issues a media statement, warning against price gouging.

The French delegation includes three public servants as a contact point for future discussion with New Caledonian leaders. But at the summit, Macron was flanked by his Overseas Minister and Armed Forces Minister, both figures distrusted by the FLNKS.

The International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) delivers its advisory opinion. The Tribunal held:

- that GHG emissions constitute pollution of the marine environment within the definition of #UNCLOS .

As Pacific leaders gather in Tonga in August for the annual Pacific Islands Forum, the #NewCaledonia crisis will be on the agenda. NC has been a full Forum member since 2016, and leaders dialogue has started (below). @forumsec plans discussions with NC President Louis Mapou soon.

Thank you to Defence Australia for their support in flying 108 Australians and other tourists from New Caledonia to Brisbane on two assisted-departure flights yesterday.
