I see this totally, although fortunately I have a good team in my current academic job. But I often previously reflected since starting teaching in 2015 that my most enjoyable jobs were working in shops and as a gardener or farmhand.

Reminds me of Liz Anderson on the rhetorical plasticity of appeals to the work ethic. You could easily put a hammer and sickle next to this and people would think you're talking about the parasitic and aristocratic rich rather than welfare cheats and liberal elites.

Honestly, I was miserable in grad school for similar reasons (along with a few others), compounded by going straight into a PhD program after graduating from a conservative Christian liberal arts college—I've never felt more out of place
