Marine energy could complement more-established renewable energy sources. UW-Madison Mechanical Engineering’s Jennifer Franck is using an U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award to investigate a technology called an oscillating foil that can operate as a turbine in rivers or tidal channels.

Next-generation batteries will use metal anodes instead of graphite, which will make them lighter and safer. A new membrane developed by UW-Madison MS&E’s Xudong Wang overcomes a major hurdle in realizing this new approach by stopping dendrite formation.
