When a trade union rep raises concerns with their trade union employer on behalf of Black staff during a dispute over toxic workplace culture & institutional racism, they probably didn't expect they'd then have to take legal advice on the grounds of Trade Union Victimisation.

This evening, our committee sent this letter to Frances Corner & Goldsmiths, University of London SMT, on behalf of our membership. Goldsmiths is constructed of world renowned depts, upheld by dedicated and innovative academics - 90 of which will receive redundancy letters on Monday.

Our dispute remains unresolved and indefinite strike action is still due to begin on 2 September. Our members care deeply about their jobs and none of us want any UCU member to be in a position where they’re left especially vulnerable to callous employers. #ReclaimUCU

The jobs of those remaining have been hard-won by the sheer resolve of members’ fight. The strength of our action-holding the line with the marking & assessment boycott, showing up for strike action and the looming indefinite strike-brought management to the negotiating table.

Our employer’s refusal to meet outside ACAS means the remaining option for further talks is two days after the planned start of our indefinite strike action. It clearly wouldn’t be fair to ask our members to walk out just before an opportunity to reach a resolution. #ReclaimUCU
