Yesterday I received one of the highest and most ancient honors in London, the Freedom of the City. But the celebration soured into an experience of indignity when upon arriving, I found that there was no ramp for me to access the stage. 🧵

Noncompliance with disability access laws are a frequent, systemic issue in the UK & beyond. AND there are so many policy levers we could pull to fix this, if only government would try! Many thanks to Scope for sharing 💜. Lots of work to do.

Seeing other kids rewarded is a massive kick in the teeth. After attending hospital appointments during school hours, then going back to school after said appointment or going home to rest then needing to play catch up. Lots of stress. Only to be made to feel less than peers.

University complaint (and final review) process can be inaccessible, difficult, time consuming, and stressful. Additionally, a university could stretch out they time they spend investigating a complaint, so that the window of opportunity for bringing legal action has closed...
