Just landed back in the UK to see Rishi is coming for the only benefit that makes this country liveable for millions of disabled people and I'm caught between thinking what the hell is the point and wanting to start a riot

He's a monster. An absolute monster. Disabled people have on going costs. It costs thousands a year in additional costs to be disabled. He knows this. Those tories know this. He is using disabled people as canon fodder.

Today's news feels like an assault on disabled people.

We are in a cost-of-living crisis. Government looking to slash disabled people’s income by hitting personal independence payment (PIP) is a horrific proposal.

It's dangerous and risks leaving disabled people destitute.

A lot to unpack in Sunak’s “welfare” speech but one headline is PIP will be reviewed.

Sunak said it may be right to pay one-off costs for adaptations but stop ongoing payments. This would mark a major shift and break decades-old entitlement to help. theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

Rishi Sunak has just declared unemployed sick and disabled people the enemy

My (sweary) analysis on the sickness benefits announcement today for Canary

Oh right this is a full scale assault from the PM on disabled people.

It's somehow all our fault.

That we're not trying hard enough. That employers are all amazing. And that PIP is too generous?!

As someone that had to go to 3 tribunals to get disability benefits (I use a powerchair full time) I'd like to tell Rishi Sunak it is not too easy to get benefits. It is a cruel & harsh system. Perhaps the rise in people unable to work is due to the huge waiting list for the NHS?

My main issue with having to use an app to notify a shop/hospital/other venue that I’m coming is that other people don’t have to. They expect to receive a good level of customer service when they show up. Why shouldn't disabled people expect the same?

As part of @UCL’s PEEP (Personal Emergency Evac Plan🚨) for disabled students/staff, I was asked the following:

“Might the measures needed for you to escape from the building in an emergency adversely affect the safe escape of other occupants?”

How unbelievably degrading. Wow.

Today an official medical provider for my uni told me they cannot provide wheelchair access.

I asked “Then what is your reasonable adjustment to ensure disabled students have equal access to care?”

Behold: their reply comes, & they now suddenly have wheelchair access! Magic 😒

Sorry, we’re out of wheelchair ramps for the next 5 years but have you tried killing yourself? We can provide *that* disability-related equipment. Incidentally that’s the only disability-related equipment we have available

Let me get this right. The already has an app that asks all the right questions for access (hurrah) but they've outsourced creating a different app that won't?!?
Is this scripted by or something?!?

Absolutely agreed. Public venues, *particularly* NHS medical services, need to be able to serve any disabled person who comes through the door. I absolutely will not be “booking” 48 hours before for something nondisabled people can expect to do on a whim. I don’t like this model.

Another symptom of the 2010s austerity cuts to social care and family members being prosecuted for taking up the role of care.
