If perfunctory, insincere & frustrating interventions are represented as therapy, it will not be many years before people will think they have ‘tried therapy’ & found it wanting. They are unlikely to think about trying it again —Nancy McWilliams Written 1999. Now it has happened

This Court of Protection case involved CLOSED hearings (family were excluded + not told they were taking place) & COVERT MEDICATION (she refused meds so care home put them in her food). By claire martin We've been following it since 2020 #openjustice openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2024/08/18/tan…

"No matter what, I will never believe or trust any of you", says P. She's been taken from her mother against her wishes and covertly medicated Now they want her to trust the professionals. openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2024/08/18/tan… via Open Justice Court of Protection Project

If judges are going to interfere with people’s lives – separate them from the people they love, order them to be given secret medications they have refused – they need to be sure that the positive outcomes outweigh the negative ones openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2024/08/18/tan… via Open Justice Court of Protection Project

As of today, this is how women must dress in Afghanistan, according to the Taliban's Supreme Leader. The following rules are now in effect: The full face must be covered—no hands, nothing visible. The black veil was presented as a "recommendation" a year ago, now it is the law.

My new blog post with @GeorgeMKeynes on judicial error. An expensive , time-consuming error with a court injunction that had to be corrected by members of the public. Not a good look for #openjustice openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2024/08/22/pro…

This seems like such a waste of people’s and the court’s valuable time. I don’t understand why it needed to be this labyrinthine.

Great blog - lovely to hear about a P who feels happy with the court’s decision. Helpful guidance on joining a CVP hearing too - I have made the same mistake, because the option to join as ‘observer’ is there. Yet, if you do this, you can’t reply if someone speaks to you!

Important judgment: there's a compelling public interest argument preventing an abuser shielding behind his rights or those of his child to prevent him from being publicly identified Thank you The Bureau of Investigative Journalism for application to name + Hannah Summers for reporting thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2024-0…

What an awful situation: if P can decide where he lives he is likely to return to the streets. And P alleges abuse in hospital and wants to ‘get out’. A careful and detailed account of the decision before the judge. ⁦Open Justice Court of Protection Project⁩ openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2024/08/30/a-c…

I felt awkward reading this blog & completely agree, *before* a hearing is listed as public, the possibility of an observer should be actively considered & a decision made as to public/private, to prevent exactly this kind of situation. openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2024/09/03/bal… via Open Justice Court of Protection Project

Reflecting on Rachel Braverman’s words at the Trauma Informed Lawyering event last night. “The whole system is sick.” The family court is hugely triggering and however well trained we are as practitioners, most hearings are like walking your client into a burning building. 😔

"Not all men" - but so many men helped Gisele Pelicot's husband: The 73 men who came to her house and raped her. The 3 men who left - and didn't call the police. The thousands of men who saw the ads on the website - and didn't call the police. theguardian.com/world/article/…
