A High Court judge has been removed from overseeing a case involving an alleged rape, in part due to his membership of the Garrick club. Dr Charlotte Proudman representing the mother submitted a request on the grounds he was a member of the men-only club. tinyurl.com/528vh8x5

Lawyers, activists and MPs call for an end to the male-only Garrick Club but get no response when they try to deliver their letter. And the latest on the story from amelia gentleman 👉 shorturl.at/ewE27
That wouldn't have been the case without Hannah Summers exhaustive and thoughtful reporting, and I really can't wait to see what the project grows into. Today she's written about her experiences reporting family court cases. It's well worth a read thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2024-0…
Massive thanks to my editor Gareth Davies and my colleague Louise Tickle who have been working on #familycourtfiles with me. Have also had great support for the project from my other The Bureau of Investigative Journalism colleagues.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has hired Hannah Summers as a full-time family court reporter in what it says is a first for the UK.
Summers will lead TBIJ's Family Court Files investigative series for the next two years:

It was great to see so many journalists at this The Bureau of Investigative Journalism event organised by Louise Tickle and hear their contributions. We were joined by some brilliant barristers/lawyers who helped create a courtroom scenario. Hope those who came will test their new skills in the family courts!
Times journalist Paul Morgan-Bentley gets a job at a prison using his own name. Here he exposes security lapses, filthy conditions and concerns regarding the death of one of the inmates at HMP Bedford. shorturl.at/jrsR2
As a barrister, I am facing disciplinary proceedings by Bar Standards Board for expressing frustrations at the “echoes of a boys’ club attitude” in a family court judgment by a judge & member of the Garrick. The disciplinary judge recused himself, as he was a member of the Garrick too.
Lawyers call on judges who are members of men-only Garrick Club to resign - more than 60 sign open letter organised by barristers Dr Charlotte Proudman and Elisabeth Traugott claiming membership is incompatible with justice, equality and fairness. shorturl.at/DLU34
