As an economist, I know that competition can be very powerful in delivering the services and products that people want. But competition to run hospitals within a provincial health monopoly will not achieve what the Premier hopes. stalbertgazette.com/local-news/alb… 🧵

Outstanding thread by Yael Moussadji, MD, FRCPC. Fear is divisive. Fear closes people off & restricts trusting collaboration that is essential for quality in care. Competition leads to cherry picking & complexity avoidance (read the evidence on cataracts & CSFs). This UCP tactic will kill us.

It was then that as a member of the executive team of the Saskatchewan Health Authority, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Verna Yiu (she/her) who made us all jealous recounting the lack of political interference from Sarah Hoffman and the autonomy she had to lead.

We have a major language problem here. #Healthcare is a complex experience that is administered as a public service. Care tho, NOT a "service". When Danielle Smith understands that, I hope she will stop this thinking about transplants & neonatal care like oil changes.

Its award nomination season and today, I spent a lot of time today reflecting on the incredible contributions of my colleagues as I wrote letters of nomination. Spirits are low but taking the time to say "you are amazing & I want to celebrate it" can make all the difference.

It takes years of great decisions to build a world class health system. It takes a handful of bad decisions to burn it to the ground. Hope Canadians pay attention. It won’t take too long for healthcare to slide from good->tolerable tolerable->bad and bad->desolate

My daughter found our old Woody doll when she moving. Barney is in love with him. We believe he thinks it is a ⁦William Ghali⁩ action figure. Not gonna burst this love bubble ❤️

Doubling down on a lie does not make it true. Truths: 1) AHS is not a 'monopoly'- it is health authority that happens to have provincial scope 2) Centralization has pros/cons 3) MD & RN shortages are NOT AHS' fault 4) Private surgical centers do not help access for all #abpoli

Close your eyes. Imagine how an RFP (request for proposals) would distract & divert people (that should be focused on quality #healthcare) away from patient care to focus on the professional survival of their teams. This is a truly terrible idea; it's health care hunger games.

All true, all excellent points. I would only add - AHS can only do what it is funded for. eg. We desperately need nurses - we are not hiring them right now. Government provides the funding and right now bragging about a surplus is more important than funding healthcare.

Any one talking #healthcare right now needs to read this Carolyn Thomas ☮️ essay on hospital philanthropy. Well funded systems should not require donor $$ & sure as hell shouldn't be pressuring patients to give. #healthcare is a human right. myheartsisters.org/2024/09/01/top… via Carolyn Thomas ☮️

I am grateful to hospital donors but I wish our publicly funded system did not so heavily rely on it but rather we had adequate funding. Donors - you annoy and get laughs from many by plastering your name on these hallowed places with important names far older than your life.

This. #Healthcare & #HigherEducation institutions are massive Alberta employers & make Albertans healthier & allow them to reach their potential. Investing in the wellbeing of ppl makes good economic sense. Our crisis is a result of bad planning & under-investment. #abpoli

I ❤️ my family doc. She took me on as a patient 21 years ago & has truly cared for me & my kids. Never has that care been more precious & appreciated. Smiling & supportive in this toxic provincial environment. Amazing, exceptional person. #primarycare 🌟
