Edith Anna Œnone Somerville was born in Corfu #onthisday in 1858 but within a year she moved to Castletownshend, Co. Cork.

Art training took her to London, Düsseldorf, and Paris; her travels with Violet Martin (Ross) to Denmark. Above all she wanted to be a great painter.

Delighted to find a kind neighbour left this on our doorstep this morning to 'bring in the May'.

#Otd 1652: Oliver Cromwell published declaration that Irish Wolfhounds were prohibited to be exported & insisted sufficient numbers be bred to control the wolf population. Many had been exported to European royal houses. Described in 1571 as 'bigger of bone and limb than a colt'!

Following the visit to and talk yesterday at Skibbereen Heritage I brought the Celtic Bishops to Abbeystrewry old cemetery for a time of quiet reflection.

It was great to see Amanda Clarke feature on last night's episode of the TG4 series Ag Triall ar an Tobar. In 2022 Amanda wrote a wonderful article about holy wells for our Journal. She also gave a lecture to the society on the topic and recorded a short video for us.

#Otd 1949: At midnight, 26 counties left British Commonwealth. Republic of Ireland Act came into effect & Ireland became republic on 18th. Was a parade in Dublin & smaller ones nationwide. Crowds packed O'Connell St bridge to see a 21-gun salute. 3 mins late due to those crowds!
