Born #OnThisDay 1804 James Pilkington Liberal MP Blackburn 1847-65. In 1862 he was the most high-profile victim of the 'garotting panic' in London when he was attacked, robbed and ‘almost strangled to death’. This and other cases prompted the 1863 Security against Violence Act.

Born #OnThisDay 1784 William Hodgson Barrow, the oldest member of the Commons when he retired in 1874. He had represented Notts South since 1851. Disraeli described him as ‘a man of the people’. He was among the dozen Conservative MPs who supported women’s suffrage in 1867.
