Day2 Woodland Trust🌳 #Snaizeholme 25 windblown trees into the beck and across the floodplain to #SlowTheFlow , keeping the natural in #NFM It will take a few spates to work water around, over or under and reinstate much needed habitat diversity #geomorphology Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust

#TroutInTheTown - and why removing weirs and dams like this one at #GoatBridge in Mitcham, south London, is great for all species of fish, not to mention the whole river's ecology! southeastriverstrust.org/busting-myths-…

Freshwater fish are vital to ecosystem health, but over a third of species face extinction, including the endangered Atlantic salmon, which has declined by 70% in 25 years. While beaver reintroduction offers ecosystem benefits, their dams may pose challenges for migratory fish.

In collaboration with The Wild Trout Trust, Atlantic Salmon Trust, Westcountry Rivers Trust, and Devon Wildlife Trust we’ve adapted the findings from our Restoration Manager, Dr Rob Needham’s PhD to help people better understand the potential interactions between beavers and migratory salmonids.

2/n It appears the beck had cut into a land drain and established a new, straighter, faster course. We Identified another potential (paleo)route to reconnect to the older, longer, slower channel and carefully scraped away the turf and soil to reveal alluvial cobble & gravel #NFM

3/n As with everything this summer, it was quickly 'tested' with some rainfall! 👇 Now we are splitting the flow almost evenly between the old 'new' channel and the new 'old' channel

4/n Old Wife Gill drained into the paleochannel but was choked by grass without the main flow. Pre works e-fishing survey revealed only bullhead. Now with ~400m of 'extra' spawning habitat & better access, we're excited to see if we find trout next year #FisheryImprovement #FIP

5/n The windblown trees we scattered in the channel have already been redirecting flow, pushing it out of bank evidenced by flattened grass. #NaturalFloodManagement #NFM #WoodIsGood #SlowTheFlow = better instream habitat too!

#Beavers are spreading across mainland Britain, and here at WTT we're working with several other organisations to help people understand beavers' potential interactions with #salmonids and other #fish. More info in our website story here >> wildtrout.org/news/potential…

Day2 w/ #Aire RT and a #fishpassage challenge on Loadpit Beck. Concrete cill studded with cobble spreading flow thinly for 5m then 0.3m perch. Poor access meant hand tools only! Focussed channel to one side had bullhead & loach passing by time we left site The Wild Trout Trust #FIP

Day3&4 w/ #Aire RT, now on Gill Beck, Baildon, a #fishpassage issue on my backburner for ~6y so it was good to #LetItFlow today. Thanks to the landowner, Bradford Council & funders, this important spawning beck is much more accessible. Over to the beck now to rearrange the substrate

Our @profjgrey on with several projects for a local #RiversTrust #partner and training staff in the process. Improving access to smaller streams for spawning & feeding opportunities is so important for trout populations

Darley Beck - weirs & revetment prevent natural resupply of gravel. @wildtrouttrust working w/ #Harrogate #FlyFishers added large woody material to trap 30tonnes of gravel put in today for spawning habitat. We'll let the beck do the redistribution work! Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust #NiddAction
