Genuinely repulsive how Sunak exploits the tragic deaths in the Channel for his own toxic political ends. How dare he claim compassion. How dare he pretend there’s a noble cause behind his inhumanity. He is not driven by decency. He’s not beating the gangs, he’s joining them.

The five people who died in the Channel this morning knew that there was a very real risk of death when they set sail in a small boat. At least, the adults did. Death was, to use a word in the news a lot this morning, a 'deterrent'. It didn't work.

Unless blocked, Sunak is going to send c.100 terrified refugees 4,000 miles away in a symbolic gesture that will neither 'stop the boats' nor save him electorally. The main result will be to cause intense pain to a group of people who have already suffered plenty.
