Chicago police officers are required to live in the city. Within the past year, two of them have been murdered on their way home from work, had their service guns taken by their killers, and their cars stolen. Areanah Preston, 24, and Luis Huesca, 30. They took Luis's badge, too.

Dean Chemerinsky is a progressive scholar, and a person of civility and rigor. That he has to defend the idea that students can't come to his home, seize a dinner, and use it as a platform for protest exposes the growing fracture in our liberal tradition.

For a counterpoint, Meghna Chakrabarti went to Dallas communities undergoing hotspot policing, but 'didn't find anyone who said 'this is terrible, we don't want law enforcement.' We were unable to find that voice.'

People greatly value fair, effective policing.

'If cities expect to help reduce our nation’s overdose crisis...their leaders need to enact compassionate, effective drug policies and ensure fair access to public space at the same time.'

Thrilled to be at this week! This morning in my remarks I made sure folks knew about our program, which is currently accepting applications until Friday 5/3. We need more women integrating data and science into policing. nij.ojp.gov/funding/nijs-l… NAWLEE

By their account, a couple running their dream small business had to shutter it because of crime, the victimization of their staff, and the disconnect between neighborhood conditions and carrying costs. These small tragedies are how a city comes undone.

The next generation needs to study philosophy because your generation's belief that all you needed was the scientific realism of fields like linguistics and neuroscience has left them a legacy of ashes.

Understanding the long history of paradigm shifts in your field isn't necessary to be one of its lab technicians, but it's necessary to be one of its scientists. It explains why you're working on certain problems today, what blind spots led you there, and where you might go next.

Firearms are now the #1 cause of US youth deaths (displacing car accidents). But WHO is dying?

We show:

Black youth firearm deaths have been rising in RURAL AREAS for >1 decade;

Since 2018, Black rural youth have matched Black urban youth

Toxicologists and other medical experts say that you can't die from touching fentanyl. So why do so many people think that you can?

FL even designed a law around the idea. What's going on here?

4+ years ago, I wrote about Buffalo's playbook to reduce street violence. Encouraging to see it's stuck with this evidence-informed blend of policing and community-led strategies. This story emphasizes the latter; I focused on the former.

'Overdose deaths have soared, and every state is being impacted. But research suggests states that haven’t expanded Medicaid coverage, such as Florida, are passing up an opportunity to lessen the toll.'

It's worth considering how much of today's expansive police role arose as unintended consequences of the portable radio and the telephone rather than a thoughtful approach to how government can best protect & serve people. As historians and theorists, these two scholars are tops.
