Check out Butcher's Dog Publishing, managed by Dr Jo Clement! She also edited Wagtail: The Roma Women’s Poetry Anthology. Buy if you can. A £3 donation option is not money-spinning, & the implication is charged. Let’s celebrate that Jo is doing something good & putting art into the world.
How are magazines meant to survive? I know many of us can't afford to subscribe to the magazines that underpin our literary ecosystem as much as we value them, but if you can, do. Right now, I can, so I'm following David Morley FRSL's lead and subscribing to Butcher's Dog Publishing.
I end the week paying tribute to Dr Jo Clement for her sheer love & belief in keeping Butcher's Dog Publishing alive for all of us. Watch how many mags are closing. She does it all on her own w. Submittable costs 👆👆👆If you don't know the economics of print, then educate yourselves & support.
Butcher’s Dog is one of the best print magazines on the UK poetry scene, and Dr Jo Clement is an incredible editor. I am genuinely baffled as to why anyone would choose cynicism over admiration when it comes to the output and workings of such a vital magazine Butcher's Dog Publishing
Dr Jo Clement Butchers Dog was the first magazine to publish me. You're doing absolutely stellar work, Jo, and the poetry scene is all the better for it.
Dr Jo Clement I’d like to know what these critics are doing to foster community and platform underrepresented voices in an arts economy where funding is no longer a feasible business model, and how they manage to afford it. We’d be worse off without Butcher’s Dog, that’s certain.
I took out a subscription to Butcher's Dog Publishing today. Its amazing editor, the poet Jo Clement Dr Jo Clement, deserves the respect of all writers and readers. The magazine is magnificent and deserves our support.
Victoria Moul Maybe Victoria Moul & others here could reflect on how hurtful it may feel, for a poetry editor trying to keep a print mag afloat (have you any idea how hard this is?) to hear 'nice little money-spinner'.
She's working to support poets.
An apology would be kind - please.
Victoria Moul Fiona Moore Once again, as our poets and I myself have said several times now, the submissions to Butcher's Dog have always been free and the option to pay £3 isn't part of the anonymous selection process. It happens a week after the final outcomes have been sent.
Dr Jo Clement as someone who ran a poetry mag for a number of years money isn't something that comes with it.
Please support small, indie publishers such as Butcher's Dog Publishing , a non-profit magazine run by the poet Dr Jo Clement with nothing but the support of poets and poetry at its core.
For anyone who truly knows what it's like to exist within poetry publishing, there is little (1)
Thank you Frances.
Butcher's Dog Publishing is proudly led by a fiercely inclusive queer, intersectional feminism and champions many voices punched down into the margins.

Guess I'm now allowed to share that one of my new poems is included in the 24 for the new issue of Butcher's Dog Publishing . . . honoured to be included in such a fantastic publication. Thank you Dr Jo Clement 😀🥳
