Academia seems to mean being in a perpetual state of β€œI’ll just get this stuff out the way and then I can get on with the important stuff”

I wrote a couple of new lectures for a new module this semester so I did what I love best and distilled them into an hour long accessible talk for my local community at Age UK Barnet

Not everyone thinks like you.

Confidence or speed, isn't a measure of value.

Give people space and time to express themselves.

Patience and listening unlocks amazing possibilities.

Michael Sheen never fails to impress.

Anyone else find reviewing very cognitively demanding, even when it’s a brilliant paper? I find I have to stop every 10-15 minutes and just stand up or something!

These are potentially exciting biomarkers and studies. But we need to be really clear on what they can and can't tell us, and for whom

Sad to hear about the death of Daniel Kahneman. Was lucky enough to interview him more than once. He was always so polite and listened with a real seriousness to questions. Here’s an interview I did with him on All in the Mind @bbcradio4 in 2011. bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01…

Looking forward to doing another series of local community talks on neuroscience and psychology - based at Age UK Barnet but open to everyone. Kicking off with some science and myth-busting around food and diet.

My PhD led me to spend 3 years working with 60 older people, many in their 8th & 9th decade. I understood then that I was getting an invaluable education but it is only now that I realise how much it shaped me and how lucky I was. Spare 5 minutes today to read this lovely piece.
