Q: What could GO WRONG with a major cancer genomics study in which tumours are sequenced to only 15x depth?
A: An awful LOT! 😟

Itai Yanai 💔 Christopher Wheat That was exactly the consideration why I gave up my research on rapidly evolving and de novo genes in 🪰 after my 1st postdoc.
At least my PhD work laid the foundation for the longest running research program of my now retired PhD advisor (Diethard Tautz). Made me proud!
Scientific research needs to slow down. What passes as science these days is shoddy, unreliable, empty glitter. Mark Zuckerberg said 'move fast & break things.' Sadly by following his dictum, we have zillion retractions that broke science & public trust.

This is a reminder that I have an open PhD position in my group 🦋🐝🧬
Join us at Centre for Palaeogenetics and Department of Zoology to investigate the genomic consequences of pollinator declines by sequencing loads of historical specimens!

I once did a latent discriminant analysis of the content of all NatureEcoEvo papers, and when specifying 2 clusters the discriminating words were “chromosomes, snps, mutations” for one, and “richness, biodiversity, ecosystem” for the other
So it should rather be NatureEcoGen?
Dan Baldassarre Also DevoEvoMed on 🦋 True for some, but not all. But, compared to $12k USD:
Evolution Journal and American Naturalist are free for members ($25 for students). I believe Ecology also has grants for members ($40 student memb.).... I believe Ecology Letters is also free of page charges...
Dan Baldassarre Also DevoEvoMed on 🦋 Alternatively, one could submit to and publish in a conceptually oriented society journal? You know, academic societies that fund grad students and undergrads to go to meetings, give out mini research and travel grants, put on symposia, enrich the intellectual life of our field?
Insects are helping us understand how animals use medicine. It was fun to write this review with great colleagues. Dalial Freitak Dr. Sheena Cotter Hauke Koch HMG Lattorff and others.

Things aren’t always what they seem! Arnaud Martin, Robert D. Reed, Antonia Monteiro & colleagues discover that the lncRNA ivory and its microRNA mir-193, not cortex, drive melanic scale identity in butterflies 🦋
