Kids gain motivation & self-esteem when adults focus on their strengths & the positives rather than their weaknesses. Empowerment from that will increase their drive to get better & then weaker areas will improve as well. A moment of praise beats an hour of criticism any day!

Keep your PERSPECTIVE:

Work for the end result
Compete only against yourself
Chart progress
Ignore naysayers
Choose greatness, not just getting by
Believe in yourself
Control your habits & mindset
Know itā€™s about the process
Donā€™t settle for less

The team youā€™re on is less important than the attitude, effort & energy you bring. Freshman, Sophomore, JV, Varsity, starter, 2nd string, role player, etc. doesnā€™t define who you are. How you respond to your role, while working for the role you want & helping your team win, DOES!

Please keep in mind: Winning is great, but with a win-at-all-cost mindset you will lose respect from your peers & even your players. Itā€™s not about wins/losses, your ego or resume. Itā€™s about helping kids. Itā€™s about positively influencing your kidsā€™ futures. Thatā€™s what matters!

'Long after the wins and losses, you'll remember your teammates and coaches; the bus rides and locker room talks...You'll remember the relationships and how you needed each other. And especially how fortunate you were to be part of a team!' -Jon Beck

Donā€™t just wait for your opportunity to come and then try to seize it. Prepare for your opportunity to come & then dominate it! You may only get an opportunity once. If youā€™re not ready for it, donā€™t expect a second one. Do whatā€™s necessary now & youā€™ll reap the benefits later!

To be a real leader, you have to lead everyone including your best friends. Calling others out & holding them accountable to & for the team isnā€™t easy, but itā€™s worth it. It leads to team achievement. Leaders should have no problem bringing others on the journey to betterment!

Always try to work on how you respond when you lose, hit adversity, get disrespected, plans change, things go against you. Donā€™t lose your temper, whine or act inappropriately. People who stay calm, adapt & think through situations come out on top more often than those who donā€™t.

If you canā€™t do it with intensity/focus in practice, then you arenā€™t gonna be able to do it in a game. You over exaggerate in practice because thereā€™s always slippage in a game. As the Navy SEALs always say: you donā€™t rise to the occasion; you sink to the level of your training!

True motivation comes from a desire to make a difference while also being allowed to be yourself. People are much more likely to work harder & serve their purpose if they know that their contribution makes a difference in the success of the team, the program or the organization!

Are you teaching your kids that ā€œitā€™s always all about themā€? If you care more about your kidā€™s success than the teamā€™s success, thatā€™s what youā€™re teaching & itā€™s the wrong message. The world wonā€™t ever be all about your child. Prepare them by teaching them to put others first!

Ego lends itself to failure. To avoid that, lose your ego. You arenā€™t entitled or owed, so earn it. Donā€™t quit when adversity hits. Be able to take constructive criticism & realize you donā€™t have all the answers. Learn to listen a lot more than you speak & donā€™t be hard to coach!

PARENTS - You can buy your kids a phone; pay for college, a car. You can buy sporting equipment but you canā€™t buy their success. If they want it, they have to earn it. Success isnā€™t easy. The ā€œpriceā€ comes with a lot of extra work, trials & failure.

If your coach holds everyone accountable, you are VERY fortunate. A lot of coaches allow some players to do whatever they want, whenever they want with absolutely no consequence. Discipline, responsibility & accountability are life prep! If your coach cares that much, respect it!
