'The USPSTF updated recommendations are an important step forward, but they stop short.'

āœ… Annual mammography
āœ… MRI/US for dense breasts
āœ… Risk assessment at early age

Bottom line - āŒ It's not enough.āŒ

Lead author on a recent study, Jean Seely, MD, is seeing that breast cancer rates are increasing in women as young as their 20's.

'But what really surprised me was the extent of the increase.'

Respectful dissent and diversity of opinion is where the magic happens, and (IMO) an important sign of a psychologically safe environment.

In cultures of politeness, dissent is a threat to social harmony. People nod and smile even if they disagree, and silence fuels groupthink.

In cultures of integrity, dissent is a sign of commitment to quality. People voice their views, and respectful debate improves decisions.

Annual screening mammography saves the most lives. Anything else prioritizes anxiety & theoretical harms from breast cancer screening. We donā€™t place the same paternalistic approach on prostate cancer screening, so why breast cancer.

While I applaud the USPTF for ā¬‡ļø the age to start screening mammography back to 40 for average-risk individuals saving about 20% more lives (& what breast cancer experts like myself have been recommending this whole time), the latest guidelines fall short in a number of ways. āž”ļø

Here are recommendations that myself & many other medical societies support:

šŸŒŸANNUAL screening mammography beginning at age 40 in AVE-RISK women

šŸŒŸbreast cancer risk assessment before age 30 to identify high-risk individuals who need to start earlier & supplement w MRI/US

Making strides with USPSTF screening recommendations but more work still needs to be done! ANNUAL mammogram starting at age 40 saves lives and is recommended by American College of Radiology Society of Breast Imaging National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) ASBrS

Women should undergo a risk assessment by age 25 āœ…

Final USPSTF breast cancer screening recommendations do not go far enough to save more womenā€™s lives. We urge the USPSTF to recommend all women have a risk assessment by age 25 & that women at average risk receive an annual starting at age 40. bit.ly/4dh8rkh
