The mole thread (QT) got some love yesterday and many have asked what happened to the mole.

Here is the concluding part of the story, the moral of which is that you should ALWAYS trust your ODP.

They’re never wrong 🧵

Important detail here about 12hr shifts.

There is no doubt they drive burnout and staff leaving. And they harm pts.

Eliminating them = more staff.

BUT 12hr shifts means more days when existing staff can do overtime.

Short term goals trump long term gains.

Most interventions for staff 'wellbeing' are insufficiently robust/sophisticated to deal with:
A) the complexity of the healthcare system
B) the extreme moral and ethic burdens placed on staff
C) the stress of unhealthy workplace cultures.

No money. So hiring freezes. No overtime. Stretched and distressed staff. Worries about collapse of the system.

This is NEW ZEALAND!
