How can it be that medically trained doctors need national regulation but individuals with no medical training and just a 2 years masters who are currently seeing and treating patients with no oversight can have their scope of practice regulated locally

Very useful to read this from GMC as it confirms they are not fit for purpose as medical regulator. They are exposing the public to predictable risk of harm and failing to protect patient safety.

As a surgeon I am deeply concerned by the GMC latest tweets and video. I don’t want my patients who I’ve seen in clinic and trust me implicitly to be put at undue risk due to AA’s acting at anything more than 1:1. The idea of 1:3/4 is frankly terrifying. 1/n

What a lot of words to say absolutely nothing of substance.

This is a complete abdication of responsibility and an abject failure in the delivery of their core function of keeping patients safe.

Local governance you say?

The GMC have tweeted this in response to widespread alarm from doctors at a video showing an 'AA' (anaesthetic associate) openly bragging about using 'local governance' to get away with less supervision by doctors.

I find the GMC's position deeply concerning.

I have been worried about Employers Setting Scope since I first became aware of it about 2 years ago.

Why? Because employers can't be trusted.

As someone who was a qualified nurse prior to starting medical school, I would not be able to do my job without having done med school.

Medicine is medicine, practiced by medics.

Even if I’d done a 2 year PA MSc, I would still not be practicing medicine.

Bloody hell, they are doubling down: 'This reiterates that PAs and AAs must always work under supervision and that appropriate governance structures must be in place, agreed at a local level' - IT'S LOCAL LEVEL LOOPHOLES THAT WILL KILL PATIENTS.

My last patient in GP before I leave for 3 months was one of my long term patients I’d looked after for years & I’ve seen him through a lot…

He smiled when he left, gave me a big hug & thanked me for being there for him as a human as well as a doctor
