A tornado watch has been issued for parts of North Carolina and Virginia until 9 PM EST

A TORNADO WATCH has been issued until 6:00 p.m. that includes Montgomery and Rowan Counties. Afternoon storms are expected fire up today across the Carolinas that will be capable of producing isolated tornadoes, damaging winds, and flooding.

Here's a preliminary ice accumulation map for this morning's freezing rain event in western NC.

Freezing rain was mostly confined to the mtns & far western + NW Piedmont. Up to ~ 0.5' of ice accrued on top of Mt Mitchell !
