It’s going to be hard to say goodbye Eastman School. Here are a few moments with students after recent final recitals, and today was the last day of juries. My work is almost done here. Thank you to all my students for your curiosity, inspiration and friendship. I will miss you!
Listen in BBC Radio 3 tonight, 7:30pm, to hear our performance of Tavener’s timeless classic The Protecting Veil, recorded live Barbican Centre last month with Guy Johnston 🎧
Britten Sinfonia also plays Bartók's Divertimento and Beethoven's Grosse Fuge.

Guy Johnston shares his experience recording Night Seasons by Rebecca Dale, described as a concerto for cello and choir in conversation: trib.al/Agu6wtn
Rebecca Dale’s new album, Night Seasons, is out in digital format #today #InternationalWomensDay ! You can read my article about the title work at The Strad. It’s also exciting to appear on the same disc as my cello hero! lnk.to/NightSeasons Signum Classics Philharmonia Orchestra
I think this may be the highest podium I’ve ever played on, or any cellist for that matter! Looking forward to the next stop in Dublin on this transcendent tour with Tavener and Britten Sinfonia

In 1986, I opened a concert with the beat of a drum Barbican Centre. My father is playing the piano and directing the youth orchestra my parents created. This Thursday, I’ll be performing Tavener’s Protecting Veil with Britten Sinfonia here nearly 40 years later!
Four shades of Tavener’s The Protecting Veil in Norwich Cathedral - a special experience tonight c/o Britten Sinfonia & Guy Johnston
A very special evening. Stunningly powerful and moving performance. Remarkable combination of control and beauty of sound Guy Johnston.
And John T’s unique compositional voice worked its magic once more.
Thank you The Guardian for sharing my memories of Tavener. Greatly looking forward to this tour with Britten Sinfonia. theguardian.com/music/2024/feb…
What a beautiful day to record Xiaogang Ye’s concerto yesterday with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic! I had the morning to enjoy a visit to Liverpool Cathedral (I have to admit I said a few prayers ahead of recording one of the most challenging works I’ve performed to date!). Next stop London.
I’m generally wary of sharing reviews — it’s strange to emphasize one person’s subjective reaction to a musical snapshot, but sometimes it just feels like they GET what you’re trying to do and it’s deeply satisfying. Thank you Gramophone for such astoundingly kind words! ♥️🌹
Today is what would have been the 80th birthday of composer John Tavener. We premiered 6 of his works across three decades, and we’re preparing for a 5-date tour with Guy Johnston of his intensely moving The Protecting Veil in February.

Star cellist Guy Johnston is the soloist and central character in Tavener's intensely beautiful The Protecting Veil, transcendent amidst Britten Sinfonia's heady layers of sound.

Wishing our fellow festival friends well with their concerts starting on 23 November.... Well worth checking out the line-up - and you might see some familiar faces (aka #Hatfieldfavourites Julian Bliss
and Braimah Kanneh-Mason)
It’s a bittersweet moment, but I’ve recently handed in my notice Eastman School to move back home closer to family for this little sprog. Ali captured this pic the other day, and whilst I’ll be sad to leave this special place in May, we are excited about our new chapter ahead.
