New report out today by Institute for Fiscal Studies colleagues on recent trends in health related benefit receipt.

Roughly 2 in 100 more people *at all ages* (16 to 64) are receiving health related benefits today, compared to 2019. Means proportionally a larger change for young people.

From Monday, the share of 2-year-olds eligible for free childcare will rise from ~30% to 70%.

The biggest winners are richer families, but overall eligibility is highest for families where no one is in paid work.

Consistently cutting the pay of higher-paid public sector workers is unlikely to be sustainable in the long term if the government wishes to recruit and retain skilled workers.

Teachers and doctors have faced unprecedented real pay cuts in recent years.

Average doctor pay in Autumn 2023 was almost 15% lower than in 2010, and average teacher pay lower by around 9%. Cuts will have been ever larger for more experienced doctors and teachers.

We’ve seen pay rises for many lower-paid public sector workers. In contrast, higher earners in the public sector have seen considerable reductions in pay.

This is due to pay deals that have consistently prioritised lower-paid workers.

TL:DR You simply can't compare current waiting list data with data from 1990s

Are more people on waiting list than then? We just don't know

Waiting lists & waiting times up since 2010 and esp since 2019. That does not mean they are worse than 1990s
