Richard Burgon explained that when, as shadow justice secretary, he was looking for someone to conduct a review of probation, ‘No matter who I asked, a person or an organisation, they all came back instantly with the same response: “Rambo! Get Rambo involved!”’

Sir Bob finished by quoting a remark made by Lord Ramsbotham’s wife, Sue, which he quoted in Prisongate:

‘If prison worked, we would be shutting prisons, not opening more. If prison worked, judges would not be seeing in the dock the same people, time over again’

Sir Bob said it was an indictment on the current situation in prisons that ‘nothing has changed’ in the 20 years since the publication of “Prisongate”

The recommendations Lord Ramsbotham made in his book, including the development of a prisons strategy, ‘need to be acted on’

Sir Bob Neill MP said that Lord Ramsbotham ‘contributed so much to public life in a raft of ways – as a soldier, as a very impressive Chief Inspector of Prisons, as a Parliamentarian. It was a life of service right from the beginning, pretty much, to the end’

In her introduction, Mary Glindon MP described Lord Ramsbotham as ‘a caring and courteous man’ and reminded the audience that it last year marked the 20th anniversary of his book, “Prisongate – the shocking state of Britain’s prisons and the need for visionary change”

Last November, the first of a planned annual lecture, in memory of the former chief inspector of prisons, the late Lord Ramsbotham, was held in the Palace of Westminster

It was chaired by mary glindon, with speeches from Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) MP and Richard Burgon MP
