COVID-19 Inquiry: Children's Rights organisations say UK Govt decisions disproportionately impacted children & rights were not respected.

Great to be Core Participants of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry alongside Save the Children UK to ensure that the impact of Government decisions on children is fully examined and children’s voices heard.

We pushed hard for children's experiences to be part of UK Covid-19 Inquiry so we're pleased that with Just for Kids Law & Children’s Rights Alliance for England we were selected as official core participants.

Today we explained how the UK govt at times failed to consider child rights when making decisions.

There are significant gaps in support for care experienced young people who face homelessness. The Govt need to take action now by:
➡️Removing intentional homelessness & local connection test
➡️Extending priority need to care leavers up to 25

We welcome EHRC new resources to help end hair discrimination in schools. We regularly see cases where Black pupils are discriminated against and excluded from school due to their afro-textured hair or hairstyles by teachers or through behaviour and uniform policies

One third of care leavers become homeless in the first 2 years immediately after they leave care. This Care Leavers Week #NCLW22 , we want the Govt to pledge to implement the #CareReview recommendations to ensure stronger support & protections for care leavers facing homelessness.

Just for Kids Law Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Natalie Williams, talked about their support for child victims to ensure their legal rights are respected. She spoke of cases where children have been excluded due to behaviour they have been coerced into by those exploiting them

Final conclusions from the joint meeting focus on the importance of pastoral care, the voices and lived experience of children and young people, recognising the magnitude of this problem and treating this problem as a safeguarding matter.
