The unique Trichtingen torc consists of an iron core with a silver mantel. It’s too large and too heavy for human use (6.7kg), it was rather worn by a wooden cult image.
Dating 2nd/1st c. BC.

Abbotsbury Castle, Dorset is a multivallate hillfort enclosing around 4.5 acres. Triangular in shape, the structure appears to display at least 2 phases of development – the initial single circuit of defences belongs to the Early Iron Age.

Late 9th century wall painting fragment of an angel. It was excavated at New Minster in Winchester, and possibly came from one of the monastic buildings founded by King Alfred. Now on display Winchester Cathedral 📸 My own.

Characterful heads at the base of the pulpit carved by the sisters for their father's church in 1889 are said to represent the sisters themselves. If so, these two are Violet and Mary, I reckon. 📸: my own

Apr 24: Feast of the translation of Wilfrid (†709), bishop. One of the era's most colourful prelates. In one story, Archbishop Oda (†958) moved his bones from Hrypis (Ripon) to Canterbury; in another, Oswald (†992), archbishop of York, enshrined them at Ripon. ©Ripon Cathedral

Choir stall poppy head featuring a 'creature' and carved in the workshop. If this were medieval, one might think it's a caterpillar carved by someone who's never seen a caterpillar but surely not in 1915? 📸: my own

Today is St George’s Day, the patron saint of England, so here is a magnificent wall painting of George fighting the dragon. From Pickering Church depicting, North Yorkshire, dating to around 1470. I shall nod to the bluebells today.

In honour of and here's a sumptuous panel from Chertsey Abbey, now in the British Museum.
Before anyone corrects me, I *know* it actually depicts Richard I, but for today at least we can pretend otherwise and enjoy a masterpiece of medieval tilework!

Of the medieval murals depicting St George that have survived here in Wales, this C15th representation at St Cadoc's Church, Llancarfan, is by far the best preserved. The amount of detail we can still see is just amazing! 😍

The monastery at Gyruum (Jarrow), where Bede was to live and work, was dedicated to St Paul in 685. Among those present at the ceremony was Ecgfrith, king of the Northumbrians, a little under four weeks before his death at the Battle of Dunnichen.
