Abbotsbury Castle, Dorset is a multivallate hillfort enclosing around 4.5 acres. Triangular in shape, the structure appears to display at least 2 phases of development – the initial single circuit of defences belongs to the Early Iron Age.

The ‘Severan Tondo’ depicting Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and their sons Caracalla & Geta (face scratched out). Painted on wood, the imperial portrait dates to around 200 AD, and originated from Egypt. On display at the Altes Museum in Berlin. #Woodensday 📸 My own
Late 9th century wall painting fragment of an angel. It was excavated at New Minster in Winchester, and possibly came from one of the monastic buildings founded by King Alfred. Now on display Winchester Cathedral #WallpaintingWednesday #Wessex 📸 My own.
