The initiative reflects Uganda Prisons Service broader strategy to combat violent extremism and radicalization, highlighting the global commitment to addressing these challenges through training, capacity building, collaborations & international cooperation with UNODC Eastern Africa and EU in Uganda

Ms. Brenda Sana, Commissioner of Prisons (Commandant - PATS) stressed the ongoing commitment to improving prison management and ensuring the safety and security of all Ugandans through professional & well-trained prison staff

Mr. Wansadha mentioned that Prisons Officers holding sensitive positions at station level will be targeted as part of the coming PCVE training program

Other developments concerning management of violent extremist prisoners will involve collaboration with other security agencies

The closing ceremony, held at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, was presided over by CGP, Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija

36 prison officers were trained in methods to counter violent extremism, gaining skills and knowledge to be disseminated across prison stations nationwide

The Commissioner General also extended his gratitude to the UNODC Eastern Africa and the EU in Uganda for their crucial support in this initiative.

Ms. Sharon Lesa Nyambe, the UNODC Head of Office in Kampala provided insights into the background of the training & highlighted the ongoing partnership between UNODC Eastern Africa and Uganda Prisons Service.

She highlighted the significance of sustained efforts in countering violent extremism in Uganda.

Uganda Prisons Service, in partnership with the UNODC Eastern Africa and the EU in Uganda, has successfully concluded a five (5) days Training of Trainers (ToT) course aimed at enhancing the management of Violent Extremist Prisoners (VEPs) and preventing radicalisation within the prison system.

Today, we wrap up a productive capacity building session for 35+ staff from the Prison Academy & Training School.

In the coming weeks, they will assume the responsibility of instructing fellow Uganda Prisons Service staff to address violent extremism & radicalization within prisons.
