Up and down the country Conservative MPs will be looking over their shoulder terrified of the Liberal Democrats who have just won more seats than them in the local elections.

NEW: The Liberal Democrats will table a motion of no confidence in the Government as soon as Parliament returns tomorrow, in a bid to force a June general election.

But it would need the backing of Conservative MPs to pass - ie turkeys voting for Christmas.

NEW: Lib Dem leader Ed Davey to table motion of no confidence in government when Parliament returns tomorrow, in bid to force June general election.

(Bit of a stunt as, even if Labour & SNP back such a vote, the Tories still have a big majority.)

Another big moment of locals is that Lib Dems beat Tories to second place on seats won, for first time since 1996.

Their revival in South West continues (securing control of Dorset for first time) while chances of a ‘Portillo moment’ with eg Jeremy Hunt or Michael Gove grow.…

These results show what we all know: we need a General Election now.

Winning more councillors than the Tories provides a platform for Parliamentary successes at the GE. With more fantastic Liberal Democrats Cllrs, and winning Dorset Council for the first time, people in the south west are making their voices heard - and are saying they want change.

We are ready to take the fight to this awful Conservative government.

Rishi Sunak may bury his head and hide in Number 10, but we know what the people know: It's time for a General election!

Extraordinary to say this, but the Lib Dems have won more council seats in these local elections than the governing Conservative Party, which trails in third.

Ed Davey says Tory MPs will be “looking over their shoulder terrified”…

Conservatives are placing in third place for these council elections to the Lib Dems. Ignore the spin, these are very bad results indeed and confirm that the Conservatives are currently heading to a severe defeat.

The Lib Dems have won more council seats in Thursday's local elections than the Conservatives... which hasn't happened since 1996 mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

The Lib Dems have won more councillors than the Conservatives for the first time since *1996*.

The next election is looking disastrous for the Tories in both the Blue Wall and the Red Wall.
