As we score conservation successes in rising #wildlife populations, there's need for policy reform to establish some form of a HWC insurance scheme, and to channel more household level benefits into these extremely poor #localcommunities living in remote hard-to-reach rural areas

The harsh reality is that it's #womenandchildren that are hard hit by unmitigated HWC as food stocks, and houses are destroyed; children orphaned & facing an uncertain future. For poor #localcommunities already plagued by poverty & livelihood fragility, HWC is a massive disaster

Yet another bread winner trampled to death by #elephants leaving behind yet another widow and orphans, then a house with maize razed to the ground rendering the family homeless; human-wildlife conflict is painfully real for #localcommunities living around Kasungu National Park.

With so many African countries clinging to neocolonial conservation laws that frown on HWC compensation, IPLC organizations need robust M&E systems to track and report HWC cases to build a case for evidence based policy and legal reform. With support from the Tilitonse Foundation, the National CBNRM Forum held a Governance Capacity Building workshop at the Nature Sanctuary in Lilongwe. To prevent elite capture and promote equitable sharing of biodiversity benefits, robust governance and accountability are key.

It is getting conservation funding to the point of impact that will make conservation relevant for rural #IPLCcommunities who bear the cost of living with dangerous wild animals. #Localcommunities must always be at the centre of all conservation work to incentivise stewardship.

On my way to a fundraising event in Jo'burg organised by African Nature Based Tourism Platform, a platform that mobilizes funds for IPLC organizations. With 1% of global conservation funds reaching #localcommunities , this is probably the way to go if humanity is to save the planet & our common destiny.

I would bet of the 70% animals, probably 70% are domestic leaving 30% attributable to wildlife. Banning is not the answer; for some, bush meat means survival and source of protein.

Declining soil fertility & rising fertilizer prices will drive pressure on protected areas for fertile farm land - habitat loss. After all, a hungry man is an angry man; more so when he bears unaddressed historical grievances after being evicted from the same protected area

It's harvest time in Malawi, & maize yields have taken a hit after fertilizer prices more than trebled. The impending food insecurity poses a serious threat to conservation for which action is needed now. Invest in composting & alternative livelihoods to save wildlife and people
