Another day of record high temperatures for a few climate sites across SE AK. #akwx

Data is still being collected & will be finalized after midnight but it looks like a few places around SE AK broke their daily max temp today!

Ketchikan tied the record of 64
Klawock reached 67, record is 63
Sitka reached 62, record is 61
Yakutat reached 60, record is 58

Good afternoon, SEAK. We are warming up nicely across the area. Sitka has tied & Klawock has broken their daily high already for the day. Below are current temps & we are expecting a few other record temps to fall through out the day. Enjoy it as clouds will return tonight. #akwx

To compare just how dry that is, we can take a look at weather balloons done by NWS Las Vegas and NWS Salt Lake City at the same time. Salt Lake had 0.36' while Las Vegas was 0.46'. Both of these locations are desert climates while SE AK is a temperate rainforest. #akwx

Looking at Yakutat, we can see a similar story. Taking the atmosphere and squeezing out the water would only give us 0.19' of water.

While the warm weather has been nice, it certainly is dry. Just to give you an idea of how dry it is, we can take a look at our weather balloons that were launched at 4am. Annette came back with only 0.13' of water that could be rained out of the atmosphere if we compressed it.

Two daily high temperature records set back in 2021 were broken yesterday in SE AK. Sitka reached 65 degrees (old 61) and Yakutat reached 64 degrees (old 60). Warm weather continues Saturday before clouds and scattered showers move in from the south.

The clear skies for SE AK continue with not a cloud in the sky over the area. Looking at our Day Cloud Phase derived satellite imagery, the closest clouds are over the gulf. We can also see the snow and ice coverage in green for the panhandle. #akwx

During the spring, frozen ground reduces the amount of water from melting snow or rainfall that can seep into the ground. A rapid warming can cause excessive melt water from the snowpack that can overflow streams, rivers and lakes.
