After lengthy negotiations, the Preparatory Committee has approved a comprehensive programme to support the next decade of work as we approach #SIDS4 🌴

The 1718 Committee Panel of Experts has played a vital role in monitoring the sanctions on DPRK’s illegal weapons programmes. Russia’s veto in the #UNSC of the DPRK Panel of Experts mandate renewal undermines the global non-proliferation system.

They recommitted to the historic partnership between 🇳🇿 & 🇺🇸 and the principles that underpin it.

We discussed NZ’s strong support for multilateralism and the need to address the threats of sea-level rise, including for Pacific Small Island

When Secretary-General António Guterres and Minister Peters met today discussions focused on a shared commitment to partnering with the Pacific Islands region and a common concern about the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

“Since the start of the current crisis in Gaza, the veto has been used five times to prevent the Security Council from acting decisively. This has seen the Council fail in its responsibility to maintain international peace and security.”

The Minister was pleased to meet Karin Landgren, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations & current Executive Director of the Security Council Report.

They discussed a range of major peace & security issues, as well as initiatives for reforming the United Nations.

Over 32,000 lives have been lost in the Israel-Gaza conflict, all while the #UNSC continues to fail in its responsibility to maintain international peace & security.

New Zealand is calling for a blueprint for peace including an immediate ceasefire.

The Foreign Minister has told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York today that an immediate ceasefire is needed in Gaza to halt the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe.

A debate is just starting in the United Nations General Assembly about the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs will deliver a New Zealand statement as part of this debate in the next hour or so.

While in New York, the Minister will address the UN General Assembly on 🇳🇿’s deep concerns about the situation in Gaza. While in Washington, the Minister will also have a programme of calls on Capitol Hill. 
 
Mr Peters arrives in 🇺🇸 on 6 April and returns to 🇳🇿 on 14 April.

Spending time in New York & Washington in the coming week will allow 🇳🇿 the opportunity to engage with the leadership of 🇺🇳 & 🇺🇸 on pressing regional & global security issues.
