Taking office in March of 1861, President Abraham Lincoln pleaded for peace, “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies.” That hope was shattered with the bombardment of Fort Sumter in South Carolina #OTD in 1861, beginning 4 terrible years of the Civil War.

Suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in Warm Springs, Georgia, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died #OTD in 1945. Leading the nation through the Great Depression & World War II, FDR was one of our most influential presidents. Learn about him at his memorial on the National Mall.

It's a #CherryBlossom encore. The Kwanzans are blooming! Named after a mountain in Japan, the Kwanzan cherry trees bloom in bright pink clusters and are primarily found in East Potomac Park. Going around Ohio Drive on the Hains Point loop, you can't miss them. #WashingtonDC 🌸🌸🌸

Today, we were honored to welcome Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to the National Mall. Symbolizing the friendship between our nations, Prime Minister Kishida presented two cherry trees to National Park Service Director Chuck Sams to join our other Japanese cherry trees.🌸🇺🇸🇯🇵

Born #OTD in 1880, Frances Perkins broke barriers when she became the first woman Cabinet member in American history as President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her the Secretary of Labor. Dedicated to helping workers & the less-fortunate, she led an inspiring life of service.

A relief to the nation and a hard-won victory for Lincoln, the Civil War effectively ended at Appomattox Court House, VA, #OTD in 1865. Offering the Confederates generous surrender terms, Lincoln hoped for peace & reunification, 'With malice towards none, with charity for all.'

On April 9, 1939, 75,000+ people saw singer Marian Anderson perform at the Lincoln Memorial. Denied the chance to perform at Constitution Hall due to a 'white performers-only' policy, the integrated concert was a watershed moment in #WashingtonDC history: nps.gov/articles/000/m…

The partial solar eclipse on the National Mall was awesome! We were glad to see people using protective glasses to safely enjoy the moment. It was fun to look up and watch the Moon's progress across the Sun, and cool to look down and see the crescent sun effect on the shadows.😎

Washington, D.C. is not in the path of totality for today's solar eclipse, but it should still be an impressive sight. Here, almost 90% of the sun's surface will be blocked by the Moon for a few minutes around 3:20pm. Tips for safe eclipse viewing here: nps.gov/articles/eclip…

This year's #cherryblossom story isn't quite over. The Kwanzan variety of cherry trees are coming into bloom now. Dozens of these gorgeous trees planted together on the Potomac side of the Hains Point loop will offer a breathtaking bright pink display over the next week. 🌸🌸🌸

During this year's annual #eagle survey in the Washington Metropolitan Area, our Aviation Unit located an amazing active nest with baby chicks. It's only fitting that Eagle 1 🚁 would be able to find such an amazing sight!

Besides a few determined cherry trees, most of the Yoshino blossoms around the Tidal Basin are gone. Your last chance to see cherry blossoms on the National Mall this year is coming soon with the blooming of the Kwanzans. Stayed tuned for those updates.
