PSA, don’t EVER tell a trainee that they’re too “kind”, “caring” or “soft” for a career in critical care medicine. Our field is full of people that think those attributes are important!

Dear incoming interns:

Remember that your attendings have been practicing medicine for years, while you're essentially getting a new job every 4 weeks.

Know that your job is not to know everything. You job is to show up, ask questions, & care deeply for your patients.

Navigating the boundaries of being both a patient and medical learner is so challenging. All patients deserve for sensitivity to be paid to their privacy and confidentiality, and learners should not have to demonstrate their medical knowledge while seeking care.

As an IM resident in the ICU, I felt like my male colleagues were doing tons of lines while I got few. I wondered: am I imagining this? Is this gendered? Turns out others wondered the same. So we decided to study it. The results are now out in @atsscholar.

I may have used the term “hypovolemic vibe” teaching morning report today…followed quickly, of course, by the JAMA rational clinical exam for volume assessment 😬

Through the pandemic, residents have lost vacations, electives, had exams cancelled/rescheduled, got pulled from rotations to cover sick colleagues & had to try to learn in arguably the most difficult time in the history of our profession.
Check in w/ your trainees & thank them.

Sickening: The City of Toronto is hiring private security companies to patrol and target people experiencing homelessness in public parks.

Imagine if the city just spent their resources on helping unhoused folks with housing, instead of criminalizing them for living in poverty.

Many in the Ontario medical community are learning of the tragic loss of Candace Nayman. Candace was one of my best friends for close to twenty years. To honour her memory, I'd like to share some things about Candace and what mattered to her. (1/13)

one of my very first attendings during M3 year advised me, 'become the kind of doctor who people are excited to see is on call.' i think about that every day—who do people trust to take care of their patients? who is humble and responsive? who is simply a delight to work with?

I spoke to my team today about how we need to be more intentional in how we bear witness to the grief of patients and families—grief about a diagnosis, a change in health status, the loss of a loved one, the trauma of hospitalization…things we easily can become desensitized to.
